BAMBI MORTUARY _____ flower photoshoot
Concept Development · Creative Direction · Art Installation · Photography · Visual Storytelling · Collaboration
BAMBI MORTUARY is a conceptual art project that explores the journey of grief through a whimsical floral installation, blending the innocence of 'Bambi' with the stark reality of a mortuary. Inspired by Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking," it visually represents the illusions created by grief.

BRIEF
The challenge was to develop a unique concept and translate it into the language of flowers, then produce a studio photoshoot to visually express the concept, accompanied by a creative book documenting the process.
The project was created within Elisava’s Master in Art Direction and New Narratives, under the course Concepts & Roses, which encouraged us to merge conceptual thinking with material expression.
GOAL
To open an emotional and aesthetic conversation about the journey of grief, exploring how magical thinking distorts perception and creates the illusion of continuity after loss.
At the same time, the project aimed to express and integrate our multidisciplinary skills - from set design, concept development, art direction, and photography to editing, web design, and graphic composition, turning the creative process itself into an act of reflection and transformation.

CONCEPT
BAMBI MORTUARY embodies the tension between innocence and mortality.
“Bambi” symbolizes childhood, vulnerability, and the naive denial of pain; “Mortuary” represents the confrontation with reality and death. Together, they form a metaphorical space where grief meets imagination.
The project draws inspiration from Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking and Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception.
PROCESS
Following the 4D creative model: Discover, Define, Develop, Direct our process unfolded as a visual and conceptual investigation:
-
Research & Discovery: Building collages to explore visual illusions we have intres in.
-
Concept Development: From these collages emerged “The Loop of Grief”, an illusion where perception bends around pain.
-
Material Exploration: Collaborating with FlowersbyBornay, we scouted their floral studio to design a spatial installation. Flowers embodied the “Bambi” fantasy, while cold materials like gray marble and plaster evoked the mortuary atmosphere.
-
Design & Production: We created an organic floral installation — a surreal forest bridging color and decay. Controlled lighting and material contrasts emphasized the illusion between dream and reality.
-
Symbolic Touch: A vintage Bambi figurine crowned the composition, linking innocence and death through a single, haunting image.

MY ROLE
As part of the collective creative team, I contributed to the concept and art direction, helping shape the visual narrative and emotional tone of Bambi Mortuary.
I also took the role of photographer, capturing the final installation and crafting its visual documentation.
In addition, I designed and built the project’s digital “creative book”, a website that presented our research, process, and outcomes in an engaging narrative format.
SOFT SKILLS IN ACTION
Team Leadership & Collaboration: Guided creative and styling teams toward a unified aesthetic.
Creative Problem-Solving: Balanced artistic experimentation with production realities.
Communication & Adaptability: Maintained alignment among multidisciplinary contributors in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.

CHALLENGE
Translating an abstract psychological concept into a tangible installation that balanced beauty and discomfort. Working within a collaborative academic environment also meant merging multiple creative voices under a unified narrative and aesthetic.
SOLUTION
We relied on strong visual communication and conceptual clarity, presenting moodboards, collages, and lighting tests to align perspectives. By combining poetic thinking with a structured methodology, we achieved both artistic coherence and emotional depth.

IMPACT
The project resulted in a floral installation and photo series that visualized grief as both magical and paralyzing. It resonated with audiences for its emotional honesty and visual refinement, positioning Bambi Mortuary as an aesthetic reflection on mourning and perception.
The concept was envisioned as a starting point for potential narrative extensions - such as an illustrated book or animated short exploring grief through design and symbolism.
